Thought I'd let you know where I'd got too after your suggestions

i moved up to a 12 size needle which definitely seems to help and this coupled with my awareness not to "hold on to" or "tug" the fabric is reducing the number if skipped stitches.

Many thanks

Just a note about the presser foot: make sure it is up before threading the top thread. It could skip the tension discs if the presser foot is down when threading.

Are your letters fused to the background fabric? If so it might be the fusible. I like Wonderunder but if you use regular Heat and Bond you will have problems. Heat and Bond Lite can be sewn through or Mistyfuse. Trying a different size needle may help, as others have said.
