Eleanor Burns books are great, they are like step by step lessons.

I am a self taught quilter that started back in the late 90's with Eleanor Burns books. Her books take you through all the steps for completing a quilt with lots of pictures. Now there are so many videos if you have questions about how to do something.

In addition to a good book, it is also very helpful to watch all the youtube videos. Some people really benefit from seeing and hearing in addition to readying......I personally think Jenny at Missouri Star Quilt company it an excellent, non-fussy teacher......Your Niece (age ?) would really benefit was all of the above, and from you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I also can recommend the Quilters Acadamy by Harriet Hargrave. I lend mine to new first time quilters.

Fons and Porter Complete Guide to quilting and Alex Anderson books are the best ones I used.

I still refer to this book when i question something.

First-Time Quiltmaking learning to quilt in six easy lessons.

I bought it at Joann's with a 50% off coupon and have loved it ever since. I think I've had it for three years. It answers the questions a beginning quilter will have and shows you how to make several simple quilts.

Go to Quilt In A Days website and watch videos of Eleanor Burns. She is the best for beginners.
Also Quilterstv is a great website with lots of videos that are free to watch.

Eleanor Burns books -- they have the best detail for a beginner. As far as general information, the Better Homes and Gardens book is good.

I agree with the Fons & Porter book. I think it's wonderful!
