Default What is a Y seam?

I read all the time about Y seams, yet I don't know what they are and if I have ever done one. Will someone explain what it is? Thanks in advance!!

Default y-seams

y-seams are used to connect 3 pieces of fabric- like when making tumbling blocks- and other blocks as well- you stitch 2 sides and a 'stem'- a y
like these.

Yup; ditto to the good explanations already given. Trust me, once you've made a quilt pattern that calls for "y" seams, (I did a tumbing block quilt), you know what they are. Trick is to sew to within a 1/4" before the end of your seam before starting the next two. Follow a pattern's instructions, they do a much better job of explaining it!
