I usually cut WOF with my binding. That is the most economical way of cutting the fabric. But when I did a Queen size quilt for a customer, I would cut BOTH the borders and binding from the length to the fabric.

I like LOF if I can do it without a lot of waste, because I prefer fewer seams in my binding.
I will often take the trimmings from backing quilts and cut those into strips for binding something else; I have several "sets" of binding strips in my cabinet waiting to be matched up with the right quilt.
I also use a lot of black fabric in my quilts so I use black for binding a lot; I keep bolts of black on hand. When I need to cut black binding for one quilt I will go ahead and lop a couple yards off of the bolt and cut the whole amount into long strips and just stash the extra for later. I use it for binding or sashing or sometimes as part of a border - I never regret having a stash of long strips of black fabric!

I only cut bias binding. It is more forgiving of my issues, and I can make a really pretty binding. I did try a straight binding once, and for some reason had to fight to keep it straight and it looked awful. I took it off, and did it again with bias. I am impressed by those who can make a straight binding look good because I can not. I am OK with that. I have an easy trick for cutting bias binding that I have never seen in print, but it works for me.

I have tried bias binding, making it with the tube method but am not thrilled with the small triangle that happens. Those seams are just too close together. Is there a way to make it & not have those close seams?
