Have you used black batting in your quilts? I know it is good for using in dark colored quilts , so the bearding doesn't show . But what if you have some lighter parts in the quilt also--will the black bearding show up and make it look bad? Is it worth the extra expense to buy black , if I already have a roll of white batting?

You are correct, it might beard through the lighter parts. I've had that happen. But I've only used Hobbs black and other brands might not beard. Also, you may want put some black fabric behind the light parts of your quilt to see how the dark batting will look. Sometimes the batting shadows through and drabs the color of light fabric.

I was trying to visualize how one might put white batting behind the light blocks, but quickly realized it would get too complicated!! Good luck. I'm planning a black and white quilt, so may search for the same answer!

In my opinion, I would use the white if the quilt has white or light areas. A lot of time the "bearding" disappears when the quilt is washed.

I was going to use black once but the cats peeled back the top and shredded it. Not sure what they know that I don't, but I have used warm and natural ever since.

i have used black batting 3 times...in predominitly black quilts...i have never experienced any 'bearding' so i do not know if that would show through...i guess if it was doing it it would probably show. my quilts had black backing, black backgrounds and were appliqued--no bearding involved...nice batting though. one of my quilts did have some areas that were not black...the batting simply darkened the hue of the fabric...nothing showing through though.

I've used Warm&Natural black batting in a number of quilts - all dark, with no problem. Feels and quilts just like the cream and white W&N battings.

I was in Joann's a couple of years ago. The manager knew I was a quilter and asked if I wanted to buy the bolt of black batting. Apparently, it was just sitting around and not selling. I ended up buying it for less than $15 bucks - for a 40 yard bolt. I've only got around 3 quilts worth left.

But I wouldn't use it behind a white/very light colored top.

I love the black for dark quilts. I try to keep one on hand at all times.
My sister and I receive Amish made quilts and the black works wonderful for them.

I have used Quilters Dream lo loft poly in black and the closest I got to any kind of bearding was occasionally my hand quilting thread pulled some black batting to the surface. The lightest color in my quilt is yellow and the batting is not showing through nor is it bearding in any way.

I have also used a higher loft dark gray poly batting in the quilt in the below post. You can see it also has light colors and the batting did not come through at all. I machine quilted that one. Unfortunately I had the batting in my stash for ages and don't know the brand. It was poly I know but the scratchy kind. Probably bought in the days before I learned how to be fussy about my batting too! Anyway if you go to the attached post you can see in the picture that none of the batting is showing through or bearding through on the bright yellow/green color
