ackkk!!!! i am so incredibly confused... trying to figure out how big my blocks should be, given that i've {changed my mind, heheh} and want to make it 96" x 110" bedspread-size. I've attached a photo of my plan; it's 5 x 7 blocks, alternating patterned and blank blocks.
I don't think I want to do in-between sashing strips. But I'm soooo confused because i don't know how to figure out how big the border should be compared to the blocks, and i don't know how big my blocks should be given the size of the quilt size, and i don't even know how big I should cut my squares out of the fabric that I've prewashed and preshrunk already. helpppppp!?!!?!?

the corners are a "buttercup" pattern, and the pattern is "swamp angel".

if you did 12" finished blocks is would work out to be 60x84 so you would have to have several borders so I would expand the blocks to 6x8 72x96....then you can put sashing inbetween the blocks or a couple of boarders would work really well....search some quilt magazines to come close to the size you want...lots of examples I'm sure.

If you make your quilt 5 blocks X 7 blocks and make your blocks 14" squares, your quilt without borders will be 70" X 98".

Now if you add a 6" border all the way around, your quilt will be 82" by 110". You want your quilt longer than this. The easiest would be to add an additional INSIDE border of 5" to both the top and bottom. This will give you the 96" by 110" you are looking for and will still look very nice on your bed.

I attaching a mock up of your quilt. Ignore the colors and I made one mistake on it and didn't try to fix it. Hope this helps.

Also, I forgot to add this but these measurements are without seam allowances. You would make your blocks 14 1/2", cut your borders at 6 1/2" and 5 1/2".

Like your design!

To make it the size you want without sashing would require 17 or 18 inch blocks depending on the width of border you want.

18 x 5 = 90 + 3"(x2) border = 96
17 x 5 = 85 + 6.5"(x2) border (or multiple borders to get this width)

18 x 7 = 126 (bigger than you want, even without border)
17 x 7 = 119 (still bigger than you want)

Well let's see what we get with 16" blocks...

16 x 5 = 80 so would need 8"(x2) of border on this dimension
16 x 7 = 105 but 8"(x2) of border here gives you 121"

15.5 x 5 = 77.5 so would need 11.25"(x2) of border
15.5 x 7 = 108.5 only need 1.5 inches total here

If you changed it to 7 x 9 (keeping to the odd# of squares each way, which I think is the effect you're aiming for) let's see what we get...

13 x 7 = 91 so 2.5"(x2) border to get 96"
13 x 9 = 97 so 2.5"(x2) border gives you 102" meaning you would need a second 4"(x2) border in this dimension

or
12 x 7 = 84 so 6" (x2) of border gives you 96"
12 x 9 = 98 and 6" (x2) of border would give you 110"

Hope this helps!

Let's try this again.

Your quilt will be 70 X 98" before borders. Add 6" borders around all four sides would make your quilt 82" X 110". You want your quilt to WIDER than 82" so you can add a 7" border on the INSIDE of your 6" border on the SIDES only to give you the extra width.

7" is a really wide border unless you want a beautiful feather or something quilted in it.

I have another suggestion:

Put no borders on the top of the quilt. This will be under your pillow or on top, either way looks nice.

Now put the borders on the sides and bottom of your quilt.

Inside border: 3"
Middle: 4"
Bottom: 6"

This makes your quilt 96" X 111".

This is the new mockup. Sorry for the mistake on the first one.

This mockup is done in Electric Quilt. This is a great program but not cheap. I use it a lot but I am a full time quilter.

I got a private message from the original poster and I answered her but I couldn't post a picture privately so I told her I would answer here with a picture.

I changed the blocks for you to 15" blocks. She has a calculator that helps her with this size blocks. She only wants one border to simplify things.

So, if you use 15" blocks with 5 X 7 layout your quilt will be 75" 105" without borders.

If you add a 6" border to the sides and bottom only, your quilt will be 87" by 111". This is a nice queen with a pillow tuck.

When adding a border to only the sides and bottom, it looks a little funny in a picture but it really looks nice on the bed as you have your quilt blocks showing all the way to your headboard and still get the nice look of a border on the sides and bottom of a quilt. Then I suggest binding in the same fabric as the border.
