Few people quilt without marking the design in some way. That's all the paper does. SITD uses lines already on the quilt. Some long arm quilters use a laser to guide the machine. Some don't use a pattern some or all of the time. Some do the quilting by hand; some by sewing machine; some by a quilting machine. Some use frames; some don't. Some people live to piece; some swear by appliqué. Some people pay to have someone else quilt the top. They are all "real" quilters. And so are you. Now, you go, girl.
I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world. This makes it hard to plan the day.

Just jump in and enjoy the process. The rest will sort itself out. Tune out what others are saying and just have fun. Quilting takes all kinds of forms. Besides, once you trace enough you might find you can draw it in your sleep. I think you are doing just fine. Have fun.
