Borders

When putting your borders on, do you do the sides then the top and bottom or do you work your way around the quilt?
Also if you sew a scant 1/4 on your blocks would you want to sew a scant also making the length of the borders and when putting them onto the quilt top?

For one reason, it usually takes less fabric that way.

Sides and then top for me, too. I usually cut my borders 1/2 to 1 inch wider than I want. This gives me a bit extra for when the quilting pulls it in a bit and it's easier to square it up before I put the binding on.

The woman who taught my quilting class told us to sew the borders on each side starting in the middle to minimize stretch, etc. I'm getting ready to put on my first border and decided it needs to be mitered. Am I crazy or what?
