My brother was about 240 $ from kens sewing center. Its a 600ex. Good little machine. plenty of fancy stitches and does a good straight stitch also. I have fmq on it, just baby quilts and wall hangings. does good.

I have a Brother Quattro. It is their top of the line and embroidery/sewing. I love it. I've had it for 5 years now and except for its yearly cleaning it has not gone to the shop. I know you are asking about less costly and just sewing but i thought I should mention the quality of Brother machines no matter the size and cost.

I have 3 Brothers, 9000 model, 9050, and the innovis QC 1000 sewing embroidery machines. Have not had any trouble with any of them and one of the reasons I like them so well is all the attachments, many varied stitching feet they come with, at no extra cost and many different built in stitches. I think they are a great manufacturer, wishing and wishing for a Brother Dreamweaver, maybe someday. Highly recommend them for a beginner quilter.

Oh, wow, am so happy with these reviews!!!! Thank you ladies so much. Now I feel safe directing her to a Brother machine. And so glad to hear the manuals are well written.

I will keep reading the replies to this...just so thankful for the ones so far.

I also have a QC1000 (which they don't make anymore) and I have had it for 7 years never a problem. And at the same time I bought a serger which took a header off the table I had it on when I bumped the table . Only thing I had to replace was the thread guide. Everything else worked fine. I am pleased with the quality.

Love the quilt! I have a brother 7700 from Costco for less than $200(3 yrs old). I am currently using it to quilt but am also teaching my granddaughters some basic sewing. It has some fancy stitches that I have tried a few times. No problems.

I have a Se 350 it sews beautiful and is also embroidery machine. I haven't had any problems with it and it sews nicely if you want to embroider you can if not you don't have to. I bought it at Wal Mart a few yrs ago so not a real expensive machine but has a good name. The quilt is gorgeous love the colors and the pattern. Good Luck. Sue

I have the Brother SQ9000. It will be 4 years old next month and has NEVER had to go to the shop. It has loads of attachments, and 80 stitches. I am very happy with this and can recommend it to anyone. Jim only had to pay $199 at Walmart.

When I first started quilting I also bought the Brother SQ9000. I also got it at Wal*Mart for $200. The only thing I didn't like was the harp size. It was small but I managed to do SITD when quilting with it. I now have a Bernina 820 but, if I take any lessons, I take my SQ9000 with me. It's light and easy to manage.

I have this machine also, and have sewn I don't know how many quilts on it. I also have the PQ1500s that I have had for almost a year. I picked it up on Craig's List for $400. Love my Brother machines!
