I am getting ready to quilt a twin size quilt and I want to do a wave border (not a scallop border). Has anyone done this and do you have any tips for me? I am wondering if I should draw it all out first or make a template? I hope this makes sense. Thanks!

You would do it the same way as you do a scallop border.

Sew on a regular straight border a bit wider than you want your waves.

You can either freehand draw the wave down the border or make a template and use it to trace it around the entire border.

Depends on if you want it to flow perfectly evenly down the sides and around corners (like scallops, which are most always precise in number and placement), or are looking for a more non-traditional, free-form look.

You can do the drawing of the waves before or after the quilt is basted.
I use 505 to baste and it makes a pretty stiff surface - I'd probably do it after it's basted (even though quilts are traditionally marked before).
Personal choice.

Quilt the top however you planned.
THEN you trim the quilt top and apply the (bias) binding.

Trimming the border beforehand will just make it a nightmare to quilt - either on a domestic or LA machine.

When I did mine I taped together telephone pages the length of each side. I use a desert plate for the corners and folded the taped pages a side at a time to get the spacing even. I used the creases to center the plate and then reversed the plate for the inner part of the wave between.
When I had my edges just right, I cut out the outline. I pinned my paper to the quilt straight edge and drew along the paper edge with my marking pencil. I stitched the binding to the drawn edge before cutting the wave edge. There is a rotary cutting ruler that allows you to cut the wave edge but since I was just doing one quilt I didn't buy it.

If she wants her quilting to follow the pattern of the wave, doesn't she have to at least draw the wave before she quilts it? I'm thinking of patterned quilting such as leaves and vines, feathers, etc. and not meanderings.

Yes, if you want the quilting to follow the wave (or scallop or whatever), you need to mark it on the quilt before you quilt it, but don't cut the shaped edge until the quilting is done.

Scroll down and click on center quilt (butterfly quilt). Looks like she also used rick rack on it. I think she has a video on this. If this is the quilt you might want to buy the pattern or DVD for it.
