What is your favorite forum/message board do you ask questions on? and the site you use for free patterns?

I like the one hosted by Martha Pullen. Sadly, they upgraded their servers and lost years of older posts, but there's lots of great advice.
The Ann the Gran site has lots of free designs, but you get what you pay for. I'd rather pay for a design from Embroidery Library and get something that will stitch out nicely. They often have designs for $1.

I have also gotten lots of freebies from Ann The Gran site, but someone above said it already - you get what you pay for. I have gotten many designs there that are fine, and others - not so much. I always do a test embroidery right away and if it doesn't stitch out right, I delete it immediately. Good luck
