It looks to me like it is a variation of the Trip Around the World quilt.

I also think it is a variation of Trip Around the World. Looks like it was split into fourths and then recombined. I would call it Four Corners of the World.

It is beautiful and I think it will be a great gift for your son.

Looks more like a bargello to me, but it doesn't look like it is made like a bargello unless the rectangular red and blue blocks would have a seam in them.

I don't know the real name of it, but I would call it cress cross around the world. It is a beautiful quilt.

I agree. It looks like halves of a TAtW. One of my students actually did hers that way and it was striking.
