    You can do that or do dense stipple quilting around the monster, that will make the monster "pop" more.

    I used a techinque once, can't remember where I got the idea from. Anyhow, you put a higher loft batting under your quilt, or just the part that you want to look fluffier. Then do a single line stitch around the part you want to emphasize on your sewing machine. Cut away the high loft batting close to the stitch lines. Put a layer of your low loft batting on the back and your backing fabric. Then quilt as you normally do. Try to get the quilting/stippling as close to the edge of the single line stitch as you did first.

    I did a quilt with hearts around the border and it really worked well for me.
