I get these in a box of quilting stuff at the 'good well' but if this to go to a pattern I can not for the life of me think what pattern it is?? or was she just cutting up her scrapes?

they are probably the corners cut off from making 1/2 square triangle blocks.

Looks like trimmed corners to me as well. Just a suggestion sew them together , trim to size for 1/2 sq triangle units.
