Default Can you recommend a machine

My daughter has started quilting and she needs a new machine. She needs one that she can use for piecing and also for quilting. She usually makes things like wall hangings, baby quilts, etc. The machine she has now belonged to my MIL and was purchased in the 40's. Can you recommend a mid-priced machine?

I love Pfaff machines for piecing and quilting. They have the Ambition line of machines that are great for beginners and intermediates. Pfaff has the built in IDT which is like a walking foot. So much easier than having to change out a presser foot to install a walking foot!

Another vote for the Brother PQ-1500s. Not only is it a workhorse, it's really easy to clean and oil.

There are so many DSM out there on the market place. There are board members who love their Janome, Brother, Pfaff, Baby Lock and I LOVE my Bernina !!

My Daughter has the Brother PQ-1500 for over a year or so. She loves it and uses it all the time. Very good cost also.

I would consider getting her a vintage Singer 301. It meets all of her requirements and will last a lifetime.

There are many good makes and modals but it's what they have is more important. Like needle up and down, ability to lower feed dogs, being able to move needle position more than a couple of clicks. Then there are some nice but not essential features like needle threader, automatic thread cutter, variable speed and of course the wonderful knee lift some machines have. Thinking of weight if you are going to take it to class's and the size of the throat if you are going to quilt larger quilts. The most important thing is to buy it from a good dealer that has good customer care and a first class repair person.
