My DIL as ask for a quilt to keep in the car. My ? is have any of you made a quilt with pockets on them that you can put small toys , granny can slip candy into, things along this line. If so would you do it again, and did you have a pattern or just work off the top of your head?

Why not? There's no rules!! :)

How about making it like a fiddle quilt for entertainment .... those pockets could have closures .... zipper, buttons, velcro, snaps, shoe string to tie, gathered with draw string, etc.

Also colours and textures could be a feature plus I Spy fabrics.

My first thought was of something made of corduroy or denim that could be "abused"

My grandmother made all of us "car quilts". She didn't put pockets on them, I was afraid some candy would get stuck in them and make a real mess. I did collect patches from our travels and sew them on the back. I suggest a matching small hanging with pockets to put on the back of the seat in front of the kids. You could put pencils, paper, books, snacks etc in it and it would be easily removed.

Here is a link to a pattern, but you should be able to figure one out:

And now as a Grammy yourself, have you made them for your Grands?

I made a kite quilt with each block being a kite. The kites were open and you could slip fun things down if you wished. I found it in a magazine quite awhile ago.

Maybe a pattern for a quillow would work (quilt that folds into a pillow). You could put a zipper on the pocket and/or add smaller pockets for treats.

My kids all had quillows for the car. Pockets on it would have made it fun too!

How about a denim quilt? You can use the upper denim fabric with the pockets for ready made pockets. Should be quick, easy not to heavy if it is small.
