This is my first try at a carpenters star block. I'm also inexperienced with piecing. I have two questions. There's some puckering going on in the half square triangles. Is there a way to avoid this? Also, how do you cut down on bulk on the back where the seams all meet? There are like big nubs back there. I'm going to try to post a picture but it's my first time trying that too so I hope it comes out. Thanks so much!

You are doing a great job. If I get too many seams coming together, I press them open to eliminate some of the bulk. Looks great. Thanks for sharing.

Your block is great .... you didn't "lose the points" ... and pressing seams
open really helps.

Half square triangles have a bias edge, which tends to stretch - that's probably where your puckering is coming from. Starch helps, so does pressing not ironing. But, I think it looks really good - lots of points that are still pointy! :) mine more often then not get squared off.
