Here is what I do:
I have a shelf that has dividers on it with the alphabet letter on each divider. I put the books in the appropriate space. I then use receipe cards and list a book with author on each card and then file them in a little box I made with alphabet dividers. When I take a book from the shelf, I pull the card and put it where I can see that I have a book "out" ( like the library). I also have an alphabetical list of my books in my documents so I can check to make sure I don't buy the same book twice.
There are probably other better systems out there, but this has worked for me for years.

I keep them together by the type of quilting is in the book: curved seams; PP. applique, foundation piecing, regular piecing. free motion. LA quilting, history, and whatever else is left.
Yep, I also use my spreadsheet as needed... esp for rulers.

mine are on the shelves according to what they are- scrap quilting, applique, paper piecing, technique/workbook types, machine quilting, hand quilting ect. i have 5 (6 foot) book shelves plus 2 closets of books and like the library i can usually find what i need in a minute or two.

Somewhere I saw information about a software program found at www.collectorz.com - I think it was under $20. I am so glad to have bought this. My only association with them is as a consumer. I have catalogued all of my quilting books and then using a feature of the program have also uploaded them to my iPod. That is very handy because when faced with a beautiful, tempting selection of books, you can easily view your own collection and avoid purchasing a duplicate. They also have a little scanner for the isbn numbers. I bought the cheaper one; although it's a bit persnickety, it works fine for my use and simplifies adding most books. Some of my older books had to be hand keyed into the records.
