Default chalk over a stencil

I was wondering if any one can tell me how to keep the chalk on my quilt. It just comes off before I can finish a design. I just do a little at a time, but it comes off almost before I get started. I hope someone know what to do. Thank you

What type of marking chalk are you using?

I have heard of using hair spray to keep the loose chalk on longer. I would test it on a sample first and make sure the alcohol in the hairspray didn't cause the fabrics to bleed. I would also check to see how the chalk/hairspray removes from the fabric after stitching.
