I guess it's just that there are so many phenomenal patterns that use them the way they are, and would then be more difficult otherwise.
If you want to combine 4-patches and charm square, the squares will have to be cut down to 4 1/2 inches. Kind of a pain.
Also, I have noticed that strips that are supposed to be 2 1/2 inches are not always cut true to that measurement. So if you need 1 1/4 inch strips, you might be in trouble there.
I wish the strips were sold as 3 inches wide so they could be cut down accurately.

Anyone know of any charm packs out there currently with 62 pieces (like was in 'HELLO BETTY' awhile back? Let me know if you do hear of something with the larger number of pieces please. I'd like to try out a dresden plate (at some point) and so want as much (coordinated) variety as possible. I only see the 42 piece variety at this time.
PS: HOPE EVERYONE HAD A WONDERFUL THANKSGIVING WITH LOTS OF LEFTOVERS SO LOTS OF TIME TO QUILT...AND NO COOKING! (smile!)

You could just buy two charm packs, either coordinating or the same, to end up w/ 60 -80.
I would not want to spend time cutting 3 inch strips down. That would be the stuff of nightmare to me. Why not just buy some fat quarters or yardage if you prefer something other than 2.5" ? You can almost always find the yardage of fabrics that are in the pre-cuts if you really want it to match.

Another size sold is 10" squares, some call them "layer cake". That would give you the fabric of four 5" squares with a little more wiggle room to cut your segments.
