I was gathering up new fabric which I have purchased during the last six months or so and I find I have four packs of charm squares. My question - to wash or not to wash?

Always having belonged to the "I wash everything first" brigade, I want to wash these too, but balk at the thought of all those squares crashing around in my front-loader washing machine. I thought of perhaps putting them in lingerie washing bags.

Please don't tell me to wash each one by hand and air dry it...please

the size will be off if you wash them.

I will use mine unwashed, although I prewash everything else.

precuts are usually recommended to not prewash...if you really feel you must wash them put them into a net bag made for fine washables...or a pillowcase tied closed to keep them from damage...they will no longer be usable as intended (for a charm quilt type) because they will no longer be uniform...

I read in an article in FOns and Porter you should never wash any pre-cuts because size will get distorted slightly but enough to make a difference. I have made several quilts wiht pre-cuts and do not pre-wash. Several have been washed already as they belonged to children and they survived the wash. good luck with your decision

I would not wash any precuts, unless you want to re-cut them smaller.

I wouldn't pre-wash charm squares, jelly rolls, or anything that has already been precut, if it is smaller than a fat quarter. <wave>

I do not usually use these but recently I did, and I washed some just by putting them gently into the sink with a little soap, rinsed well then on a towel to dry. I ironed when almost dry. Some frayed even when handled gently and others stayed together well.

I use mine unwashed. If you really feel you must wash just swish them around in a sink of water and air dry.
