I used to use the point of my seam ripper for my stiletto but since I got a walking foot for my old Kenmore I haven't really needed to use my seam ripper (except for ripping seams of course) :D

I asked my dentist for a pick they use for cleaning teeth. He had some old ones. One end is very sharp and has almost a hook on it. I can "pin" the material as I am sewing with it and then as it goes under the foot I pull it out and grab some more fabric. The other end is a little more blunt and can be used as a stiletto also. I use it for lots of things. I make sure I keep a cork on that sharp end at all times! AND yes, I sterilized it before I used it! :lol:
I do also use a bamboo skewer...I glue cute little beads on the top of a 6 inch skewer and give them to my sewing friends. If they become damaged, just sharpen them in the pencil sharpener.

Hello,I have always thought that a stiletto was to be used for marking quilting patterns.You can only use on 100o/o cotton and before you put your three layers together(top,wadding and backing) if you see what I mean.The marks stay a long time and of course need no removing after quilting. I have found lovely old stilettos at car boot sales or antique markets, mostly made of bone and some of them with lovely carved designs ,a great way of collecting items cheaply that preserve old crafts. I have found that a nut pick from my nut cracker set works great also! You can find these at rummage sales really reasonable!
