I have never put a scalloped border on a quilt so I am wondering if I just sew on my wide border and then cut the the edges after it is quilted? To me that sound correct but like I say this is my first time??

Yes, you are correct. The scallops are almost always cut after quilting. Be sure you cut your binding on the bias.

Depending on how you plan on quilting you may want to mark the position of the scallops.

Eleanor Burns scallop ruler is the best way I have found to do scallops. The chart tells you how many scallops you need per side to come out even on the corners. I have used the plate method and it's the pits.

Missouri Star Quilt Company has a tutorial showing a tool they sell to make scalloped borders.

I also suggest stay stitching after quilting but before cutting/binding on or near th scallop line.
