Default Combo or not?

I have the go ahead from DH to get an embroidery machine. I missed out on a great deal for a Brother PE 770. Since looking at other machines by Brother and I can't decide which would be best and I need help.

Should I go with a sewing/embroidery machine combo or an embroidery only machine?

Appreciate any and all advice.

I got a used Janome 350E and am very pleased with it. It is an embroidery only machine. I also have a Janome Horizon.

I like my 350E because 1. I can sew while embroidering...both machines going at once, so, in a sense, I can do double duty at once. but secondly, since it is a Janome, and I also have a Janome Horizon, it uses the same size bobbins!!! That is a HUGE plus. I love it. I can fill the bobbins on the Horizon and not have to stop embroidering to fill the bobbin with white thread.

I've never had a combo, so I can't comment on one.

I have both. A Brother Embroidery machine and a Viking combo. I have to admit that I use the Viking for both so it gets much more use. If you burn out on embroidery or you have just embroidered everything in sight the machine will just take up space. Whatever you choose get the largest hoop size you can afford.

I'm thinking about a combo because I don't plan to embroider that much and I don't sew everyday so it makes sense for me, plus the higher end combos usually have more features than you can get on the embroidery only. My dream is the brother isadore, it probably cost an arm and a leg

I decided to go with the PE 770 after all. Before placing the order on Ebay for $455.00, I checked Amazon one more time and found a deal even better than the one I missed out on. I was able to purchase a NEW one for $400.00 plus 17.99 shipping! Doing the happy dance! lol

Thank you all for your advice.

i have a combo machine- and am glad - when i first got it we all embroidered ALOT- like every day would come up with something to stitch---after a year the (novelty) started wearing off- it got to where we (might) embroider something once a month or so---then a couple more years go by & it's a (special occassion) couple times a year- and now 8 years later- i think i embroidered something for my daughter a couple years ago---so, i'm glad it is a sewing machine too- otherwise it would just be a machine taking up space with no purpose. it's nice to have it & know if something comes up i want to embroider i can---but it's not very often the need comes up any more. reminds me of all the different game consoles we bought over the years- the kids would play them to death for about 6 months- then it may not be turned on again for 6 months- the novelty wears off....unless you specifically do alot of machine embroidery---and i think if my children were not adults---maybe if i had it when they were little i would have used it more- embellishing all those clothes i made them in the 70's-80's

Ckcowl: That is the best rationale I've seen as to whether to get a combo or embroidery machine! Thanks for giving me some good food for thought.
