hi I am fairly new to quilting and have picked out a pattern for beginners but I do not understand the directions it is a simple double nine block 9 inch block but the block has two solid squares along with the two nine patch what would be the cut sizes be for each cut they have me cutting weird and wasting a couple inches of fabric for the small blocks.Sorry if this makes no sense.

What size block are you trying to make?

What do your directions say?

9 inch blocks strips of 5 1/2 x 20 + in 3 different colors then for two colors where the solid block will be cut 5 1/2 x 10 1/2 then cut 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 then 3 rd color 5 1/2 x 20 + inch into 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 cuts what I am confused about is why 5 1/2 width if you cut it into 4 1/2?

Are you trying to make A, B, or C - or something different?

What is supposed to be the "finished" size of the block?

What you can also do is get some fabric and do a test block. Cut it directly into the 4.5" pieces, like you think (and it looks like) you should be able to do. If it works, great. If not, do it their way :)

I think the 4.5 block is to make up for the seams after you piece the other pieces together. Like in example b or c that bearisgray posted. Just a thought

Sorry, I don't understand any of these dimensions. Usually 4-1/2" cuts means you end up with a 9-patch with finished dimensions of 12" square (12-1/2" unfinished). 5-1/2" widths dont fit with this at all.

Is this the pattern?

If so, you would want to create your 9-patches first, then cut the solid blocks to the dimension that exactly fit your finished 9-patch dimension.
