Hi everyone, I want to make a 'modern' quilt as a gift to my newly married nephew and his bride. As many young couples now, they have a minimalistic type of decorating style, but they would still like to have a quilt for their living room. I found this fabric with a tree-like print and a few other fabrics to complement the main print. I want to make a striped quilt, that will highlight the tree print. The main print was designed by a Canadian native artist and I really like the colors and design.
The stripes will run the length of the quilt and I plan to quilt it with long runs of straight quilting. I figure about 4 or 5 repeats of the stripes should do it.
My question is: how wide should I cut the stripes? I was thinking of maybe 2 1/2" or 3" wide finished. Should I make them all the same width or should the main fabric be a wider stripe than the others?
I know that I will get great advice from the people on this board- the source for all quilting related information.

That branch fabric is beautiful and think I would want to use it in the full length of the top and in fairly wide strips to highlight the fabric. I think you would need about 6 to 8 inch strips to get the branches effect in. I might even be tempted to save it and use it for the full back. A cool modern looking quilt pattern is Shadowbox if that would work for you.

I agree with tartan that this pattern would work quite well with your fabrics. I would showcase that tree fabric which is absolutely fabulous. I would make it the border and cut it in such a way that the trees ran the entire length of the border. If you have enough of it you could also use it in a couple of the blocks. Your WOW fabric that seems to read solid would make an excellent background and the solid black would be your shadows. This quilt will be modern, hip, classy and beautiful.

How about a one block wonder using the tree fabric as the one block and the other fabrics as varying borders.

There was a quilt pattern posted and I used it for a back of a quilt. I really like the 3D effect of this pattern. Here is a pic of my quilt back. I have seen better examples of this pattern made by Board members but here is mine.

Shadowbox was my first thought, but if you want long strips, how about braided strips of the other colors alternating with the gorgeous tree fabric. That one is too nice to cut very narrow - I'm thinking 8 inches wide.

I really like this one. Maybe you could place the tree fabric in where the white strips are and use the other colors You would have to match the strips up on the tree side. I think it would look wonderful.
