Has anyone tried cutting your own quilting stencils?? Years ago I had a 'thingy' that got hot on the tip, kind of like a wood burning tool. It was made for cutting stencils for painting. Of course, I can't find it now. But was wondering if anyone has ever used one of these for making your own quilting stencils?

I give my husband a drawing, and he cuts them out of wood for me.

I have cut them out of stencil template material. I used a blade, not the cutting tool like you described :D:D:D

I use my wood burner to burn out templates. I use a low heat setting. I try to do this in the summer months or in the garage. The smell of burnt plastic does stink up the whole house.

I use a similar cutter to the cheaper one in the links above. Works just fine. I use an old picture frame with the glass in it to put the template plastic on with the drawing or sketch taped under it and then use the stencil cutter to cut it out.

I did one with template plastic and a cutter. It was hard to get smooth lines and just about killed my hands. I bought a stencil cutter (similar to a woodburner) but haven't used it yet.

I do this with an exacto blade- I'm sure I've misspelled it tho.

except for the comments on this board, I've known few who were satisfied with the burning tool for cutting stencils.
There was a discussion of this a few weeks ago.
I find more successful the two blade cutting knife and the flexible plastic. Info about them is at www.quiltingstencils.com
