don't over complicate it- it is simply what is left over after cutting out your project- scraps can be large or small- regular shaped(squares, rectangles, triangles) or irregular- snippets.
often if it is smaller than a fq it is considered a 'scrap'- fq's and larger get folded and put back into stash with yardage.
i have a whole stack of 9" squares that are scraps- they are each from a previous project.
some people (appliquer's) save every little piece- some people only save certain sizes and pass on what they have no use for.

I like this, but in my house, a weed is any plant growing in the wrong spot. I don't have weeds, all the plants in our garden are in exactly the right spot. Likewise, I don't have scraps, just small useful pieces of fabric. Even the littlest piece is useful in some applique. If I don't think I'll use it, I don't keep it anymore.

I haven't read the answers here, but I think you will get as many definitions of "scraps" as people that answer. LOL One persons scraps is another man's treasure. I personally consider anything smaller than a fat quarter to be a scrap. But I use my scraps for applique quilts, which I would not consider to be "scrappy" they just require smaller pieces of fabric. I think of a scrappy quilt as being one that isn't all matchy matchy. I have used fat quarters I bought from the store to make a "scrappy" quilt, I just chose ones that weren't all from one line of fabric. The fun thing about this hobby is there are no rules!! Just do what you love. :)

    Cheers!

    That's a great simple answer.
Could also mean - small amounts - not yardage.

When it comes time to the scraps into squares - that's when you get lots of discussions.

I have one idea but not sure it is the legal one, if there is one.

I think of scraps as small, unusual shapes, something that would not be easy to use.

I have not attempted a 'scrapy' type quilt so not too sure what one looks for in 'scraps.'

    Thanks.
I have a plastic tub under my sewing table that I throw my scraps in. small scraps 5 inches or smaller on one side and larger scraps on the other side. It was so full I couldn't put anything else in it so I made the SunBonnet Sue quilt and a couple of other smaller quilts for the kids. I still had 4 grocery bags of all scraps which I sold for 2.00 each at a yard sale. At this moment I only have a handful scraps, but I'm on my way to a good collection again.

Scraps- 3x3 up to just shy of a fat quarter
Crumbs - anything less than 2x2

That's my story and I'm sticking to it! Lol.

My scraps could be someone's crumbs. Not sure there is a legal definition for "scraps" as far as quilters are concerned.

I am with most of the others - less then a FQ is scraps

When I make 'scrap' quilts, I feel that they are FREE quilts ;)
