I would also try cleaning out the bobbin area. Sometimes when I hit a thick area and the needle breaks, it is because the bobbin isn't moving properly b/c the bobbin area is full of lint.

Bring it in to get it looked at. If it is making a scraping sound, something has probably been pushed out of alignment. You don't want to put wear on the parts if they are scraping. If the needle broke? there might be a piece stuck somewhere?

Hope you machine is an easy fix and not too costly. I had a similar problem with making pillow cases, then remembered and old trick - bang the thick seam area with a hammer a few times to flatten the area. It will go through the machine like a charm with no slow down or needle breakage. Good luck.
