Not necessarily, there are still a wide variety of fabric weights on the market, some are lighter weight than others.

To me, it seems that many are thinner and more loosely woven. I especially notice it in solids.
Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down the their level and beat you with experience.
I have noticed a difference too. I got out a BOM I bought in 2008 and started making it, its Moda fabric, and there is a big difference! I don't think some fabrics are as wide as they used to be either. All my fabrics were bought at Quilt Shops.
the selvedges are wider, ergo, useable fabric less wide. i have noticed a varying thickness between different fabric companies for last several years. the fabric makers costs go up but fabric buyers (we consumers) complain if their increased manufacturing prices passed along to us. something has to give. like useable width of fabric, thickness & quality of fabric. economics.

I agree. A lot of the fabric is thinner. I mostly just use quilt shop quality fabric and I have noticed it has gotten thinner. The batiks are a heavier coarser fabric.
Mostly I've noticed the light background fabrics seem to often be quite thin. Or is it just not as noticable with the darker fabrics?
I read somewhere that some have reduced their width by an inch or so.....and I would not doubt that the thread is spun thinner too...why not everything else is.
I have a hard time finding solids of any shade that are decent. Everything is less, but costs more!
