    Disappearing 9 patch help

    Hi
Can someone tell me how to determine the size blocks to cut for a D9P to reach a desired finished size? In simpler terms...if I want my D9P to finish at 9" what size blocks do I start with? If I use 3.5" then when it is cut and reassembled it will be smaller that 9" finished, right? I have not made one of these blocks yet because I was not sure of the cutting measurements but I have a sampler quilt that I think this block would go well in.

    Thanks for the help,
    Jenna

If you type in 'D9P chart' in the search blank of this board, you will find a very handy size chart for making the D9P block. Sorry I don't know how to link to it.
But your finished D9P block will be 2" less than the sum of 3 cut squares. For example, if you cut the 9 squares 4" each, three of them = 12", and the finished block size will be 10". Your desired 9" finished size is a little odd, because each cut square will have to be 3 2/3". (3.6667 x 3= 11"). If you cut each square 3 3/4" you will have a finished D9P block just slightly larger than 9".

Not all blocks will work out to an exact dimension. Use the handy chart reference and then add your borders to get the size of the quilt you want.

Ohhh I love the chart Peckish shared thank you......it looks to me like if you use 4" blocks to start with your block will be 10" that you can trim to 9.5 since you are only making 1 for a sampler quilt and the nature of the block it will still work beautifully.

Great chart! Thanks so much everyone. I think I will go w/the 3 3/4 size squares and trim to fit. I will save the chart for future projects. Thanks too katier825 for making the chart.

Hip hip horray!! That chart is awesome! I want to make a D9P and had no idea how many squares I needed.
