Statistics on quilt lost, then found

With all the mailing going on I thought this info might be valuble on what shippers lose the most quilts and how many of them are eventually recovered.

I have/ had family who have worked for the USPS for years...
Their biggest suggestion for shipping packages is to be sure
and put address labels tucked into the articles being shipped.
If a package gets torn, or the paper covering rips, the
addressess can be come lost/unreadable. Maybe pinning a
shipping label deep into the folds of a quilt might help it to
continue on it's way or be returned to the originator.
In some cases the shipping barcodes get ruined too,
so it would be impossible to track in their system :wink:

For years, we had mail misdirected on a regular basis by USPS. It would not be an exaggeration to say at least once a week we got mail for other people. You can pretty much guess if that is happening often, your mail is probably also being delivered incorrectly. We tried complaining to the postmaster, but the reply we got was that the gentleman was only a couple of years from retirement, that he was only staying long enough to get dental work done that was covered by insurance while he was still employed, and that it would be close to impossible for them to let him go. It was almost a joke - we are in the country, so the territory was fairly large - but everyone knew about it and just kind of shook their heads.
Still, all of us make mistakes, and no delivery service is going to be perfect. I wouldn't think of shipping anything of value - monetary or sentimental - via any service without insuring it. The additional cost is minimal.

I have found over the years that Fed Ex cost no more than USPS to mail something Fed Ex ground. I use them all the time and have never had any problems. I ship from Louisiana to Maryland all the time and it is there in 3 days.

I'm a FedX fan, too. I've never had an order lost, either coming to or going from my home. USPS here is lousy....I have to raise a fit every time we ask to have our mail held for vacation (we're retired, we travel a lot). They either forget to hold the mail or they forget to stop the hold. One time, it took me 6 weeks to stop them from sending our mail back saying we're not at this address :thumbdown: There's no way I'd trust them with a quilt!
