this was sent to me by a quilting buddy and I thought I'd pass it on...

What It Really Costs to Make a Quilt

QUEEN SIZED Machine Pieced Hand Quilted

MATERIALS:

Fabric 12-16 yards @ $9 per yd. $108 - $144
Batting $25 - $40
Thread $8 - $16

Total Money Invested $141 - $200

LABOR HOURS:

Piecing 20 to 60 hours
“Setting” (designing your quilt) 10 to 20 hours
Quilting 100 to 750 hours

Total hours invested 130 to 810 hours

TOTAL COST

Paying $1 per hour (Would you do this type of work for $1 an hour?!)

Materials $141 - $200
Labor $130 - $810
Total $271 - $1070

Paying minimum wage $7.25 (by law in 6/2009)

Materials $141 - $200
Labor (130-810 hrs) $942.50 - $5872.25
Total $1083.50 - $6072.25

Paying skilled labor wage $20 per hour (Don’t you consider yourself trained and skilled in this craft?)

Materials $141 - $200
Labor (130-810 hrs) $2600 - $16200

Total $2741 - $16400

Always looked at what it cost.. but in black and white, thats unbeliveable. Fuel cost and sergharges for use of ,auto,machines.

Nice, I ought to keep this handy to pass out to co-workers that want me to just whip one up for them. It amazes me at the number of hints or flat out asking I get to "make me a quilt" and then they have even gotten offended when I told them what the cost of fabric will be.

Yes, I agree. Everyone should print this and give it to the people who want a quilt. It would certainly be a good way to start the conversation about pricing.

The one quilt that I keep track of the cost to make. I didn't look it after is was done. Love the pattern, color,and the quilting. but not this quilt. have made more useing ths pattern and love them. Just knowing what that quilt cost made me mad. so not keep track anymore. HA HA HA
