I don't know this block, but it is easy to replicate. I like it too. Oops, I did white flying geese where I should have done 4 rectangles. This is a 9 inch (finished) block, beginning with a 3" (finished) central square, although it could as well have been 12".

Looks like a variation of the "Hens and Chicks" block. If you google this block, you will see images that are similar. Yes, it is an older block pattern.

I believe it is Corn and Beans. Yes, it is an older block that I think originated in the 1800's.

I don't believe it is any of the squares listed above. The center block is set on point and there are HS triangles at the corners instead of blocks. It is a fascinating pattern and it may be an original if it is an older quilt. I have my quilting books packed away until I get a new bookcase but this pattern is fascinating.

I would make it as a 'square in a square in a square', and then add the outer round with rectangles and HSTs.

I double checked my Jinny Beyer's book and it's definitely Double X (with HST
in the corners). Of course there are different variations of Double X.

Thank you to all who responded to my cry for help identifying this block...so many choices ha ha...yes I am thinking since this was made my g grandmother the 1800's is about the right time frame...i ended up taking apart one of the shredded blocks to make a pattern from. My mother felt that the quilts should be washed every Sat in HOT water with bleach...makes me crazy! So, now I am trying to replicate the quilts..there are 3 more that I have on my bucket list to tackle but life keeps getting in the way..this week has been granddaughter and friend and gdaughters #@! dog , I like dogs and cats but this one is out of control....visiting us on spring break....so no time to sit and sew....
