What is bobbin work and what is couching?

bobbin work is where you put thick threads in your bobbin and work in reverse using the bobbin thread as your top thread. It allows you to use thicker threads in your sewing machine
Couching is when you are sewing thicker threads to your fabric through a braiding or cording foot for decrorative effect.

Bobbin work is putting a decorative thread in your bobbin and a clear thread on top and sewing on the reverse side of your fabric. The bobbin thread which is usually much thicker will then become the decorative element on your fabric. Couching is taking a heavy thread or ribbon and laying it on top of your fabric and then using a small zig zag stitch with clear thread or complementing thread and stitch the heavy thread in place. I hope that helps!

I've tried bobbin work and hate it. It's just a mess for me. I didn't get the second bobbin case and had to have mine adjusted. Thread got all tangled in the bottom of machine and I had to clean for the longest time....more than once, I might add. Nope no bobbin work for me, too stressful.
However I love couching....have done cording, beads and strings of beads, odd little finds, etc. on some art quilts. It can be lots of fun.
I've also done lots of thread painting, which is sewing a contrasting color thread back and forth to create another dimension to the quilt. That was lots of fun, also.

Thank you all for the lessons and tips....I think this thread is too expensive to just play with....be afraid, maybe not, just too expensive right now...I only got one spool of colors red, yellow and green....I better buy another of each incase I mess up....LOLS! I hope the bobbin case does not get tangled up. Thank you for being so very helpful
