Back in the late 1990s someone started Y2K square swaps. The idea was from the legend of the unmarried girls back in the old days who collected 99 different quilt fabric squares and the 100th piece was a duplicate. The first unmarried man who walked by was going to be her husband.

To bring it up to date -- the goal was to collect 2000 squares. 25 three inch squares and a sig square would fit into a first class envelope. the idea was to collect from every state, province and country in the world.

There were very few quilters from Maine on line back then so I did a lot of trading. My postage sometimes was over $50.00 a month. It was a lot of fun and I met a lot of very dear quilting friends from around the world.

Later when I backpacked and hosteled, I met some of them. I made lots of quilts and still have squares. And a wonderful UFO of a double irish chain using squares and most of the sig squares

I do remember those. I had just started quilting and the first ones to show up were all very color-wheel orientated. I loved the look of that - and I tend to gravitate toward those types of quilts.

Here's a picture of how one quilter put together the squares:

Great lesson in value placement.

This site has a lot of links related to Millenium quilts:
