My friend's mother passed away, and in their family they consider the person "going to sleep." For the visitation at the funeral home, her mother was in a nightgown and robe, head on a pillow and draped with a quilt her grandmother had made. They did not use a coffin. I think there are a lot of different customs out there. This was the first time I had seen this. (They did not use the quilt in the final burial.)
Sometimes one doesn't know if a divorce is a "congratulations or condolences" one.
I really do like the idea of "new beginnings" - "off with the old, in with the new"

I would probably approach it with "comfort" and "fresh start" in mind rather than anger and other ugly feelings. It's a QUILT - not a 30-minute project that you expect her to enjoy for a year or so.
I can't imagine anyone would want to hang on to a quilt that was symbolic of the ugliness of divorce. Make her one that she can bring into her new life, as a sign of hope for a bright future.

the quilt - with its run-over cat, its male head spewing snakes, its embroidered tales of lies and deception. "divorce quilt" is something that looks like a dead cat - a furry brown beast with black tire tracks running across its broken back. "It's what my ex-husband's girlfriend . . . would look like if she got run over," A monster face with spiders and worms spilling out ...
