Default Does anyone make a quilt using gingham ?

I have collected all colors of gingham which I got shopping at my various thrift stores. Yesterday I cleaned out my sewing room and wondered if I was saving them for nothing. Since they are not 100% cotton, I wonder if they will fray when repeatedly washed in a quilt. I have many really old quilts but I don't think they have gingham in them either. Do any of you quilters here on the board use gingham ?

One of my first quilts (30 years ago ... ) was all gingham checks, different sizes and colors, tied, with flannel back - it was the first quilt I remember making ... it may still be out there somewhere, I had so many things 'lost' in all my moves over the years.

They will make a lovely, cheerful quilt. Gingham is just a happy fabric (smile). Looking forward to seeing your pictures as you progress.

I think gingham has many uses in quilting, especially with applique. I've been trying to collect bits of gingham for a while, it is such a quaint and tidy type fabric. Enjoy what you have and try it out!

I have used some gingham squares in quilts and haven't had any problem with them fraying out. Sounds like you could make a very colorful quilt.

Chicken Scratch is used on Gingham. I've been interested in this for a while!

My first quilt years and years ago also had gingham in it. I learned a lesson with that..........don't press with hot iron because it will shrink!!! I never did finish that quilt but still have some of the blocks that I would like to do something with.

I have a well-worn and often washed hand embroidered quilt on my bed that my dear Aunt Mary made MANY years ago and it was sashed with gingham and it is in perfect shape. Very soft and comfortable. Wouldn't trade it for all the money in the world.

I'd like to do a Sunbonnet Sue with ginghams for her dresses etc. I do have one quilt done with red and white gingham that I bought at an auction - unfinished; it looks like a patchwork tablecloth moreso than a quilt top - so I may just finish it as such - using a flannel backing and no batting.. the do SID to quilt it - Its a truly different look.
