When my step kids were in day care I made placemats, table cloths and napkins for the play kitchen area and some dress up play clothes for them. The fabric was all from a bag I picked up at an outlet store that sold mostly bed linens and towels. Much of it seemed to have stains like it was caught in machinery. The kids didn't care.

What size do you make the tote bags for the shelter? We have a homeless shelter & 1 for women/kids. I think this would be a great idea if I can find some samples. Thanks.

When you make the tote bags to hold personal items for women's shelters do you put in a zipper, Velcro, snap or just handles leaving top open? I have a box of these samples...some are like a deco fab but others have a funky rubberized type backing....what to do with them?

I just had to wash two storage drawers of fabric, and I had the same ball of strings. I was thinking of using them in a pillow or a dog bed. At least it will not be a total loss.

Put the pile of threads out on a tree. The birds will come and take it and use it in their nests. Then when you see nests you can look for your colorful pieces.

Please DON'T put thread/fabric scraps out for birds. It's a nice thought but the threads tangle little feet and necks, and the cotton fabrics don't dry quickly. I've rescued a few unfortunate victims who have lost toes and wingtips because the threads were too tough for Mama bird to snip free. Grasses are safer for nesting.

Ive also heard not to put threads out for birds because of those dangers.
