There is already a thread just for this subject and a lot of good information on it.

But I think the consensus is to buy a used machine maybe like a trade in or a vintage 70's machine.

This Hello Kitty sewing machine has gotten excellent reviews and is $109.99 at Target. It is made by Janome and sews well.
I purchased the smaller, less expensive Hello Kitty sewing machine and my 6 y.o. granddaughter sews on it with no problems.
Both are great machines for kids to learn to sew on.
