Dresden plate question

So here's what I'm going to do. I have put a piece of thin muslin down , right sides together with the plates. Then, sewing on the plate side, I am sewing by machine around the outer edge, making the points into scallops. Then, after trimming off the points and escess muslin, I turn the unit right side out through the hole in the middle, and press. The muslin is now a facing for the plate, and I don't have raw edge applique anymore!!! Then I can stitch down onto my background fabric using the buttonhole stitch on my machine. Seems to work well - only have one done, but will post photos later!
