I know there is several threads out there on what is the best embroidery machine at the best prices.
Many say to get the 5x7 not the 4x4 work area. But I really want an embroidery machine to do lettering more than designs. (or right now anyway)

I want something can do or would do several different font styles and up to 3-4" in height. So not know much about these machines could you please share any thoughts, machines, programs etc????

I have a sewing/quilting machine so a machine for embroidery only would be fine. And of course, limited budget. I have no problems with a used / trade in machine, I just don't have a clue on which make or model.

Just remember that the 4x4 doesn't really sew a 4x4 letter. I think about the largest I've gotten on my Brother machine is 3.94x3.94. I have the combo SE270D which is the Disney machine. You will also need a separate lettering program if you want to do various styles of lettering. I love Monogram Wizard and it is so user friendly.

I buy most of my machines factory refurbished from Ken's Sewing Center in Alabama. Great service. They ship the refurbished machines from TN distribution. I saved about $100 per machine. They sell on eBay and they have a website. wwwkenssewingcenter.com

Also, Allbrands in LA has great prices also.

To check out the Monogram Wizard lettering software go to www.sandscomputing.com or www.needleheads.com They have a lot of the popular styles and you can download a demo before you buy.

Rehooping after every letter would be a PAIN. Really, go for the largest field you can afford.

The Brother PE 770 has a 5x7 field and you can get the 5x12 hoop that would cut down on your rehooping with those large letters. $600 at a lot of places online. You will need a computer program if you want more than the 6 fonts that come preloaded. If you have EQ7, you can get the new plugin EQStitch for $150 till the end of the month that will digitize any font you have on your computer, as well as other features. Just think of your lettering as the same as any other embroidery design. The same hoop size considerations apply.

You should really go to the dealers and check out the different machines. Some you will need additional software others don't. I have a Viking and I don't need additional software. If you check out the machines you see what fits your needs the best and some are easier to learn. Working with fonts can be challenging all by itself.

Thanks, my computer in my sewing room does have issues right now and cannot connect to the net. I haven't really tried to see if i can even run my EQ7 program yet.

EQ is pretty easy; I even had it installed on my old (over 10yrs) XP laptop without any issues, now I have it on Win 7. Good luck

Get the largest hooping field you can afford. I have an emb. sewing combo and emb. only. 4x4 and 5x7 is all I have and wish many times over for a lager emb. field. A web site called Planiet Embroidery, free to join with some fonts free and some pay. I use it a lot.

I just ordered the Brother PE 700II from Costco for $589+tax and it comes with thread, stabilizer and some pre-loaded bobbins.
I really want a machine with a larger hoop, better screen, etc. but I don't have $3k to pay for it, so I figured I'd go with more of a starter machine to learn on and save my money for when I outgrow it. The Brother PE700II at Costco was the best machine for the best price that offered a 5x7 hoop, expandable to 5x12, rotation in 1 degree increments, etc.
