I really like the "Big Book of Scrap Quilts". You can get a used one quite inexpensively. Not for beginners, however, as the instructions for each quilt are not extensive.

I hate to say it but with all the great sites on the web, I haven't used a book in ages. I think the last one I bought was on continuous line quilting designs.

Quilts, Quilts, Quilts! By McClun & Nownes. Great learning tool & I like that it gives yardage & measurements for each pattern for lap, twin, double/queen & king sizes. We used this book for my beginning class & I refer back to it a lot.

The two books I learned the most from were technique books by Harriet Hargrave -- the one on machine quilting (on a domestic machine), and the one on invisible machine applique.

I also learned a lot from Debra Wagner's books -- I think she published only two or three, but they are excellent. That's where I learned how to divide batting up to make quilting large quilts on a domestic machine easier.

One of the best books I have is "Mastering Precision Piecing" by Nancy Collins. Great book, especially if like me, you like working with small pieces. I was a self-taught quilter and she un-taught of lot of bad habits I taught myself!!

Other than that, most of the books I concentrate on are about techniques, not patterns.
