Exactly What is a Quilt?
#1
I had a challenge for my guild. I made a small little quilt with decorative stitches and embellishments. I then layered, quilted and put on binding. My husband said "it's not a quilt". My daughter said it's not a quilt because a quilt is something you sleep with. Well, I use the term quilt no matter what the size and I did "quilt" it. What is it we are doing if we are not quilting?

The definitions I've seen refer to a quilt as a bed cover of some sort.
When I talk about my smaller projects...I don't just call them a quilt, I define them a bit more. Examples...these are doll quilts, miniature quilts (they will fit a tiny bed!!!)...or I make quilted table runners, quilted place mats, quilted mug mats, etc.
So in the smaller pieces, I refer to the process of quilting (verb) as the way I've finished it.
Does that make sense?

Here's what the dictionary has to say:
quilt /kwɪlt/ [kwilt]
–noun
1. a coverlet for a bed, made of two layers of fabric with some soft substance, as wool or down, between them and stitched in patterns or tufted through all thicknesses in order to prevent the filling from shifting.
2. anything quilted or resembling a quilt.
3. a bedspread or counterpane, especially a thick one.
4. Obsolete . a mattress.
–verb (used with object)
5. to stitch together (two pieces of cloth and a soft interlining), usually in an ornamental pattern.
6. to sew up between pieces of material.
7. to pad or line with material.
–verb (used without object)
8. to make quilts or quilted work.
I guess #2 could be stretched to include your guild project, but I think I'd be more inclined to qualify it as well with a descriptive adjective. Rather than just "quilt", I'd maybe call it a "hanging quilt".

here is a good article
this is my favorite quote: diary of the maker- full of her hopes and dreams, as well as her sorrows- made over a particular period, remaining as her legacy for generation that follow.
