Default Help to understand pattern

Hello, happy new years to everyone.
OK, this is my second quilt but first with a pattern. In the pattern it has a square then tells me to sew on tri-angles onto each side. But then it says it forms a bigger square. Mine looks like a square with wings. What am I doing wrong? It is to make a table runner.
Thanks,
Kim Tritt

did you sew triangles on all four sides? that would make a square in a square.

Make sure you sew 2 triangles on opposite sides first, press then sew the last two on the two remaining opposite sides. The only way they would look like wings would be if they weren't cut true, or if they weren't the right kind of triangle. I would cut half square triangles so that the two equal short sides of the triangle would form the square and the long, bias side would be sewn to the side of the original square. And sew with the triangle on the bottom. Remember the old sewing adage about sew with a baggy bottom? ha ha....Always put the bias on the bottom (and I say "always" loosely because sometimes you just can't...but always try) so the feed dogs will ease the extra fullness in. Hope this helps. You can also just google Square in a Square quilt pattern and find easy directions. The math is easy so you'll soon be able to make a S-in-S block any size you want or need. Happy New Year...hope you get lots of sewing dome! Blessings...kathy
