I need to make these blocks 8", the pattern is for a 12" block. Other than sitting down with graph paper, is there an easy way to resize this? Math has never been my best asset! lol!

Try to make one block by reducing by 1/3. 6" would be 4". 3' would be 2. you will still need your seem allowance. Just try a sample block and see if that works. Also you could make the spacers 4"x8". Some one else may have better ideas but that's all I've got. Sorry. I have no problem to stand and be corrected, gently please. I have just either eliminated or added blocks. Really like that pattern!

This might be a bit tricky. If you look closely at the block, you will see that it's based on a 6X6 grid, which doesn't divide nicely by 8". The half square triangles would need to finish at 1.333", which unless you paper piece would be tricky. Can you work with 6" blocks and maybe add a 1" border or sashing all around? If you go with a 6" block, the small squares and hst would finish at 1"..

Hmmm...teeny tiny hst's! I found this pattern....may need to switch gears. I designed a row quilt for my grand daughter (took lots of graph paper and sweat, haha) and I really want these butterflies 8" so they don't scare her!

Why would an 8" scare her less than a 12"?
Actually why would a butterfly scare her?
If so ... maybe better switch gears and not do butterflies!!


If you are adamant on 8" the individual squares will be an odd size at 1.3333".
If so, you could draw up a PP pattern to that size.

If you could go with 9", each square or HST would be 1-1/2" finished.

this is one reason i just love my EQ. i agree with QuiltE that the 8" would make the triangles too odd of a size to make the block easy to make.

Reducing 12" down to 8" will be difficult to measure. It will be 2/3 in size, and made with 4 x 4" units. Two are made with hst's and squares. I figure these are roughly 1 5/16" square, that's not exact either, and you would have to add seam allowances.
Could you not settle on a 9" block, or a 6" one with a 1" border Maybe someone else has a better idea.

This is why so many of use have Electric Quilt. It makes these changes so simple. I find lots of free patterns but doing quilts for foster kids, I have to make the design fit the size requirements that we are required to work with.

Ta-da! I re-worked the block into a 4patch, and this was easy for me to reduce to 8". It's a little different from the original block, but I am happy with it! EQ would be wonderful, but I have a vision impairment that limits my computer time. So graph paper is my friend! Thank you for all of your input!
