Sun Bonnet Sue applique help
#1
I am getting ready to applique my Sue's and Sam's to the white fabric squares. I did test run and used black thread. DD really liked the black but I wasn't to crazy about it. What colors have you all used? The Sue's and Sam's are done in the 1930's reproduction fabrics.

I have done a few and I matched the thread color to each area. So, the dress was purple, I used purple thread. The hands were creamy pink, so I used pink thread. The apron was cream, so I used cream.
Or, I have also used thread to match the background, like a cream to match the muslin.

I have used white for all of the stitches when black seemed to harsh. Other dark colors will work too, they accent nicely without being so extreme.
I try and find one color that will work, if I can't then I will match thread to each piece. Then I assembly sew all of the same color  :D:D:D

If the quilt was for the DD who loved the black, then I'd say use the black. Otherwise, do as you think the recipient would like. Or, just do it like YOU think it should be done. Sunbonnet Sue quilts will probably be popular for another hundred years.

Sunbonnet Sue was the 1st quilt I did in the late 60's. My best friend's mother taught us over our summer off in jr. high. She had us use colors to go with the fabrics. But black would look nice too. It would just stand out more.
Sunbonnet Sue overall

I always use Black Embroidery floss thread and hand stitch using blanket stitch (unless it's a little fancier, then I do needle turn stitch).
Here's a couple of my own design Sun Bonnet Sues.
