My mom loves a log cabin quilt, she took a sew as you go quilt class using that pattern a long while ago, and has now also does the variant - heart of my cabin quilt. She tells me she'll never do a quilt the old way again.

Me? We'll I'm so new the wonders of sewing machine quilting that I can't help but be inspired by every pattern that skirts my way!

My favorite, go-to block is a pinwheel star. I love it! And you can tweak and play with it and it makes lots of other blocks too.

one example.

BJ~ I love that pattern! Just the other week someone was telling me they would NEVER try a pinwheel, but really your pattern is bias square triangles. Not a big deal really, and just like you said making those exact squares and turing them different ways gets you an ohio star! Well I suppose not your's is three colors and an ohio star is only two, but your pinwheel is simply lovely all the same, thank you for sharing.

The log cabin is a great pattern cause there are so many ways to set them and get different looks. I have only made one but plan on making another only different. here is the link to the one i did

I have been quilting only less than two years. The Beginning class I took used Yellow Brick Road pattern by Terry Atkinson. I have used that pattern several times since for a baby quilt and a tablecloth. It is so easy and showcases your fabrics so well. It has instructions for baby up to Queen sizes and is designed for fat quarters. It is a great way to use of scraps or your stash. One of the teachers at my LQS writes about this pattern on her blog at:
www.theCalicoHorse.com

Enjoy!

Since I'm so new to quilting, I like to try different block patterns for every quilt I make. Funny how it seems that each block I work on is my "favorite". I always gravitate towards stars of some sort though.
