Default figuring block size

To make an 8 point star like the one in the Big Star Quilt from the Missouri Quilt Company come out as 12" finished blocks, what size squares would you need to start with. The Big Star Quilt is supposed to finish out at about 25" and she starts with 10" squares. My thought process was cut it in half and start with 5" square, but someone on the site said they did that and came out with a 10" block. Help please, Nancy

I took a screen shot, to show the block.

It's a 16-Patch (4x4), so if you want the finished block to be 12", divide that by 4 and you get 3" for each finished (after seams) small block. That means you need to cut the small corner blocks at 3-1/2" x 3-1/2". For the HST blocks, you'd need to start a bit larger, to allow for the diagonal seams.

Best bet is to make a sample block, with scrap fabric.

The whole squares cut at 31/2" for the triangles cut at 4" then trim to 31/2" . Or cut 5" draw diagonal and. .....skinny 1/4" each side and mine trimmed to 31/2" but chech first.

Thanks for the replies. I was trying to determine what size of fabric to start with to make the 4 hst's from one piece of fabric by sewing around the outside of the block. I don't think I stated that well. I then went to searching for making hst's and found a calculation and believe that if I start with a 6.5" piece it will get me the finished size I want.
