Default Fire Quilt Suggestions

y husband is a volunteer fire fighter and I would like to make him a quilt that reflects this. I have red, yellow, black and gray fabric (the tonal fabrics from joanns) and some black fabric with fire trucks all over it. I initially thought about getting the articles of each fire that he has fought and printing them on fabric and incorporating them into the quilt, but I am having trouble tracking them down.

What would you guys do with this? Is there a good pattern that simulates fire out there?

Can you use the library to look up the fires? Or the newspaper itself-they might have back copies you could scan. Or even Google the fires if you have the dates. Don't know if these suggestions help but it's worth the try.

My husband is also a volunteer firefighter. Instead of printing the articles of the fires, which could be very tedious, possibly do something with the patch/logo of his fire company? Something about his length of service; any other family members involved; is there a particular truck within the fire company that he typically rides; his position within the company (chief / engineer / firefighter / etc.)? I know for my husband, some of those calls can be pretty nasty and I'm not sure he'd want those printed on his quilt...but your hubs may feel differently...just a thought.

The only suggestion that I have - go to Walmart and buy some of their black, orange and yellow flame fabric. I believe that will add a little something to your quilt. JMHO

Wonderful ideas for a special quilt. I purchased some of the flame fabric, along with a denim look fabric. My granddaughter made it into an apron for her Dad. The pockets are flame fabric, the body of the apron denim look. She applieuqed "King of the Kitchen" in flame fabric across the top of the apron.

I'm sorry if this sounds harsh but I truly agree with post# 3. Some times memories should be just that. My DH was on the rescue squad/ FD and that is the absolute last thing he would want on a quilt. Just make him a quilt that says I love you and wraps him in love. He knows he is a fire fighter and all to much about the very tough job he does. Thank him for me.
peace

Just to clarify for post 3 and post 8 (and no I don't think you guys are being harsh! I appreciate the imput). I totally agree with the idea that some things need to stay memories, just as somethings should never be on a quilt. But my husband has been looking for a way to "scrapbook" his experiences, he just hates the whole scrapbook idea. This was one thing I thought of that could hit the "highlights" of his time with the team, but I have pretty well passed it up because it is so hard to get good quality copies of the runs he has been on. It was kinda the idea that inspired some type of fireman/fire quilt- now I just need something to do in place of that. Sorry if I wasn't clear before!

Good for you. both of you. If you can'r find pix, maybe the names of the places. where a house was saved, maybe go back and take a picture of it. Does the fire company have its own pix?
